Online Content Management & Production

When the world went online in the early 90's, I hopped along for the ride. Coded my first sites by hand, then went through the first iterations of HomeSite, FrontPage, GoLive, and, eventually DreamWeaver. I eventually combined my passion for development and humanitarian work with my background as a journalist, and worked as an online producer at the United Nations. I moved on to work as director of online content for the International Rescue Committee in New York in 1999. and in 2004 moved to freelance work for a number of non-profit and commercial clients.

I still maintain a handful of legacy sites, but I'm done with the design and functionality side of online content development. Others do it better, and my passion is once again focused on photography and writing.

Some of the sites below are no longer live or no longer have anything to do with me -- they're really just here for nostalgia and reference purposes.

The AIDS International Training and Research Program (AITRP)

fogartyThe Geisel Medical School at Dartmouth collaborates with Boston University and the Muhimbili Medical School in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania on a Fogarty-funded training program for infectious disease specialists and students. The site, built in Joomla, provides a basic online presence for the programs (And, yes, it matches the DMS DarDar site -- that's on purpose).

DarDar Health Programs

dardarThe Geisel Medical School at Dartmouth is involved in infectious disease clinical research and program implementation in Tanzania. The site, built in Joomla, provides a basic online presence for the programs.

White River Family Practice

wrfpA simple online presence for a small medical practice in Vermont, mostly brochure-ware, but with an increasing level of functionality for patients and providers alike. Built on a customized RocketTheme Joomla 1.5 template.

Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children

womenscommissionThe WCRWC is a prominent advocacy group based in New York City; they rely extensively on their website to disseminate resources and information on pressing issues regarding immigration, human rights, and the needs of the most vulnerable populations in crisis situations around the world. I originally had a design created by Enrique Sallent when I took over work on the site in 2004. Since then it has undergone several overhauls, most recently with the help of Robert Gagnon and the generosity of the Pearson Foundation. It was temporarily built as shtml, but is now largely a php affair with a database-driven resource library and news section as well as an increasing amount of multimedia content.

Reproductive Health Response in Conflict Consortium

rhrcThe RHRC site has undergone several major overhauls since I took over day-to-day maintenance and development in 2004. Initially built as static HTML, it switched to ColdFusion and in its most recent incarnation the site is built in PHP. A MySQL back-end drives a resource database with a custom-built content management interface. In 2006 we added an online test module (built partly with Macromedia's old Coursebuilder extension for Dreamweaver), and in 2007 a 3rd party online conference registration system was implemented as well.

W. A. Smith Auction Gallery

wsmithauction_800.jpgOne of the biggest auction houses in New England, Smith's has a significant number of comprehensive estate auctions throughout the year. Smith's was early to realize the potential of the web to prep and entice potential auction visitors and reach out to potential sellers, and we initially developed a very rudimentary site to get the ball rolling. Several subsequent rebuilds have led to a very involved site that can serve hundreds of images across hundreds of auction lots for a given auction, and allows Smith's staff to manage the process entirely.

Built in ColdFusion on a MySQL back-end with a custom content management module. Makes use of a modified version of the amazing lightbox js script.
