Print Design

I love the tactile and visual appeal of a well-designed piece of print: be it a magazine, a book, or even industrial design like the origami of cardboard boxes with wraparound print.

I've worked with print since my days at Hewlett-Packard in Denmark.. Started out with Ventura Publisher, then moved on to PageMaker, then Quark XPress and now InDesign. While I do not have a degree in anything artsy, I've taken the time to study and train in colors, design and typography along the way. From 400 page books to flyers and posters trial and error has taught me how to handle most everything from metallic ink spot colors to pre-press for multi-language editions.

Reproductive Health Consortium Resource CD
full_color_lowres_rhrc_cd.pngThe Reproductive Health Response in Conflict Consortium (www.rhrc.org) is predominantly an online client of mine, but occasionally other stuff crops up. This resource CD was a compilation of several hundred PDFs and other tools which was distributed worldwide to their implementing partners. Getting a master disk set up for duplication as well as the necessary artwork properly formatted was just one small part of the challenge.

MHAROA b/w "Stand Tall" Print Ad

mharoa_600.jpg Mental Health, Addiction and Retardation Organizations of America is an umbrella organization of smaller mental health non-profits that works to secure funding for its members. To encourage donations to the organization and it's members thru the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) for workplace giving, MHAROA wanted to create a series of print ads.

Non-ficition Paperbacks

boerne.jpgWorking for the Danish publishers Aschehoug Fakta and others, I designed a series of books on subjects ranging from child rearing, wine, outer space, lizards as pets, and vacationing in Denmark.

For some publishers I simply managed the production of the Danish translation of foreign originals, for others I was given the opportunity to design the whole piece from scratch. I did a brief stint doing similar work for Reader's Digest shortly after arriving the United States in 1998. Their ridiculous pay and overly demanding deadlines made the whole thing less-than-enjoyable.

Club Roskilde News
crnews_600.jpgThe fan club for the (in)famous "Roskilde Festival" in Denmark put out "c.r. news" four times a year. I radically redesigned the magazine and edited two issues before leaving Denmark. It was a 16 page A5 job in 2+1/1+1 colors.

Pølsepatruljen

poelse_cover_600.jpgHand-produced with a "print run" of about 30 copies, this little booklet was created around a story I wrote in 1997 as a farewell present to colleagues and friends when I left Denmark in 1997. An extremely silly story ("The Sausage Patrol") was illustrated by the amazing Peter Heydenreich; the cover for the booklet was printed on heavy recycled stock with a fitted sheet of vellum added. For those of you who can understand Danish and feel the need to read the whole sordid thing, the story can be found here (in Danish, obviously).

I'm a great admirer of the fine art of book binding — one day I'll learn how to do it with something other than staples and scotch tape...

SNApshot
snapshotFor years, I edited and designed the monthly newsletter SNApshot for the Danish SNA/LAN/WAN consultants dansystem A/S. A 12-16 page A4 two-color job featuring illustrations by one of Denmark's best cartoonists, Peter Heydenreich, and photos by yours truly or one of Denmark's top photo journalists, Thomas Sjørup.

... are a great opportuniity to screw around with design ideas. It's not like anyone is paying for the end product, so why not have some fun? And with a couple of kids on hand there are at least two opportunities every year.

Dean Will Do

dean_kucinich.gif"Dean Will Do -- Kucinich Will Do Better." In the run-up to the 2004 election, Rep. Dennis Kucinich stood out as the sole truly visionary candidate among the democrats. Dean was pretty cool, too, daring to oppose the Iraq war --and of course, in my home state of Vermont, he was "the local candidate." Using the amazing do-it-yourself tools at Cafe Press, I created a small run of this bumper sticker to distribute in connection with Kucinich's swing thru New Hampshire before the primaries.
